It’s the final month of the semester and I am so ready for summer. I keep fantasizing about all the books I’ll be able to read as soon as my last paper is in. I read a lot of books for class this month, as it was very much crunch time and I didn’t have as much free reading time. So far this year I’ve read 37 books.
Some minor spoilers
This month I read 10 books.
Fiction
- Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadwai: I read this for class, and I loved it. It’s any interesting update to the Frankenstein story with a completely unique story telling style. It’s also an important story about the effects of war time trauma. 4 out of 5 severed ears.
- Frankissstein by Jeanette Winters: Another one for class, it was good but not great. I liked the stuff that happened in the past more. Didn’t really know what was happening by the end. 3 out of 5 sex dolls.
- Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi: Amazing, quiet, beautiful. I want to read her other book now. 4.5 out of 5 mice.
YA
- Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo: This was a reread because I want to watch the new show, but my brain won’t allow me to until I complete the series and the Six of Crows duology. This is the only one I had read already. It was fun. 4 out of 5 antlers.
Non-Fiction
- Why She Wrote by Lauren Burke and Hannah Chapman: This was a NetGalley eArc I received. I thought this was so fun, cute, and informative. I really love any books about author’s lives. 4.5 out of 5 female authors.
Classics
- She by H. Rider Haggard: This was for class. Pretty fun, and It kept me interested to the point I really wanted to keep reading. Pretty racist though. 3 out of 5 ancient female goddesses.
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte: Hated it. Heathcliff is abusive and an ass. Everyone in this book was terrible. 2 out of 5 ghosts of dead ex-girlfriends.
- Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad: Another for class. I read this novella in one sitting but still had no idea what was going on once I finished. 1.5 out of 5 depictions of colonialism.
- The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells: My last class reading of the semester! It was okay. I don’t love body horror and really hate when animals are hurt in books. 1.5 out of 5 evil doctors.
Memoir
- My Autobiography of Carson McCullers by Jenn Shapland: One of my new favorites. I really enjoyed learning more about this author and can’t wait to revisit The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, which I read in high school. I didn’t really like it then, but I’m not sure I really understood it. 5 out of 5 destroyed love letters.
